This web-site is for everyone interested in learning more about the Bible.

This section helps Sunday school teachers find new ways of teaching familiar materials. Our goal is to augment lessons you may already have in your Sunday school curriculum.

In April, we are working with some of Jesus’ healings. Select the healings that best work for your class. We are using new and past materials.

The entire Activities section is divided into Memory Work, Activities, and Discussion Questions. You can go to any of these sections and select what best works for your pupils.

MEMORY WORK

Teachers and Parents
It is so important to encourage our little ones as well as ourselves to memorize Bible verses and stories – to become so familiar with the passage or story that its timeless relevance appears to us more and more clearly with every retelling. A major difference was evident between Sunday school pupils required to tell the story versus those who gave nodding recognition to the same story. We can not overlook the significance of memorizing a verse or story.

Consider sharing with your Sunday school pupils and parents ways to help little ones learn the verse and understand the impact of the message on their lives.

  1. Write out or type this week’s Bible verse on a card and place it on a mirror the child uses each day.
  2. Place the verse for the week in his/her lunch box.
  3. Ask the child to recite the verse before or after grace at the dinner meal.
  4. Practice as a family at dinner, going around the table with each one saying a word until the verse is complete.
  5. Put the verse to music. Create your own tune for each Bible verse. Create pictures to help remember the verse.
  6. Write it in a Bible verse notebook as many times as you can.

Bible Verses
Work with your child and your students to learn each verse. Then, discuss the meaning of the verse and how it can be applied to everyday lives. On Sundays during class, riding in the car, or at dinner, it's fun to share stories of how the children have used the verse in their lives that week.

We provide memorization verses for each week. You can add your own.

Bible Stories
This month we are following some of Jesus’ healings. Take time to look at the conversations Jesus had with each person. What do you notice about Jesus’ actions? How do those who were healed respond?

Exercise: Matt 4:23,24
And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatic, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.

  • What is healing?
  • What kinds of people needed healing in the Bible?

Create a grid for each Gospel and list the healings under each book.

EXAMPLE: The Gospel of Mark

Healing of… Who requested the healing? What did the healer say or do? How did everyone respond? What stood out to you?
Leprosy A Leper Be thou clean Don’t tell anyone He told everyone and Jesus became popular The fact that “moved with compassion” means anger in different translations.

After you’ve created a grid (see a Chronological grid of new testament healing), add your own examples. Then discuss the following questions in regard to each healing.

  • Did Jesus require anything of the people he healed?
  • What unusual thing did he do to the leper? (he touched him)
  • Why was that unusual? (people wouldn’t touch lepers because they would be made unclean)
  • What did he say to the man who was sick of the palsy?

Exercise: If you don’t want to do a comparison grid of each Gospel, select ten of your favorite healings and fill in the grid below. Then disucss each healing. Have members of the class compare the different healings they selected and explain why they selected them.

Healing of… Who requested the healing? What did the healer say or do? How did everyone respond? What stood out to you?

Exercise: Using your list of healings, write down each question Jesus asked each person (example: wilt thou be made whole? Believe ye that I am able to do this?). How do these questions help you understand the way Jesus addressed thought and brought freshness to each healing?

Exercise:
Categorize Jesus’ healings using the chronological chart of healings; divide healings into types or groups: exorcisms, physical healings, resurrections, environment, economy, accidents, and relationships. Which group had the most healings? Why do you think that’s the case?

Exercise:
Using the same chronological chart of healings, determine whether a spoken word, a touch, or a material substance was part of the healing. Which healings include a change of character in the person healed?

Exercise: Healing Journal
Hopefully you’re already in the habit of keeping a journal of your healings. If not, there’s no time like the present to start! Record what needed healing. What did you think or pray? What was the result? If you used Bible verses or stories to help you, jot down the citations. BibleWise is always happy to receive your healing messages to post on BibleWise. Sometimes if we forget to keep a record of our healing messages, we forget the good God is pouring out to us on a continual basis. Having this record reminds us of God’s constant care for us.

  DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Raising of Jairus’ Daughter Read Mark 5:22-24, 35-43 A Sick Girl; The Little Girl that was Raised to Life

  • What was Jairus’ occupation?
  • What did Jairus ask Jesus to do?
  • How old is the girl?
  • What did a servant tell Jairus?
  • What did Jesus tell Jairus?
  • What was the scene when Jesus arrived at Jairus’ home?
  • What are professional mourners? [people called to cry and wail for the person who died]
  • Did Jesus have any authority to put them out? [Not unless or until they weren’t doing their job properly.]
  • What did Jesus say to the mourners that caused them to lose their jobs? [She is not dead but sleeps]
  • Why would they lose their jobs over what Jesus said? [they laughed at him and you don’t laugh at a funeral, so then Jesus could put them out.]
  • Why did Jesus have to put everyone out of the house?
  • What did Jesus say to the girl?
  • What did Jesus request the family to do when he presented her alive?
  • Why wasn’t Jesus concerned that the girl had died?

Man at the Pool Read John 5: 1-9; The Man at the Pool; The Cripple at the Pool

  • What kinds of problems did the people have who were waiting for the moving of the waters?
  • Does the moving of the waters sound superstitious to you?  Why or why not?
  • What approaches to healing seem superstitious today?
  • Did the man ask Jesus to help him?
  • Why did Jesus approach him first? [To test his sincerity for healing. Beggars in that day made more money than a common laborer, so maybe he thought this was as good as it gets and he didn’t want to work.]
  • What did the man tell Jesus?
  • On which day of the week was this man healed?
  • What did Jesus require of the man?
  • What indication do we have that Jesus’ healing of this man didn’t require a period of recuperation?

The Blind See Read John 9: 1-41; Open Eyes; The Man with Clay on His Face

  • What was significant about Jesus healing this blind man?
  • What did Jesus do to the blind man?
  • Why do you think he spat on the ground? (the man was blind from birth – Gen 2 suggests man born of the dust or clay – Jesus is showing man’s origin is not of the dust – so go wash off that concept of birth; also spit was considered health-producing)
  • What happens after the man is healed?
  • What do you think Jesus meant by the following verses? John 9:39-41 And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind. And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also? Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.
  • What was Jesus teaching us about blindness?
  • Give examples of things we should see that we don’t see.

The Centurion’s Servant Read Luke 7:1-10 A Sick Servant: How a Roman Captain Showed His Great Faith in Jesus

  • Who sent the soldiers to Jesus?
  • What is a “centurion”? (a Roman officer in charge of 100 or so men)
  • What did the men ask Jesus to do?
  • Why did they talk about their master?
  • When Jesus arrives, who comes out to greet him?
  • Why did the centurion reject Jesus’ offer to see the sick soldier?
  • What did he ask Jesus to do?
  • Why doesn’t the centurion want Jesus to come to his house? [He is a Gentile and a Jew would be considered unclean if he entered his house – he is being kind and considerate]
    • What was his reasoning for telling Jesus just to speak the word?
    • What was Jesus’ response to the centurion’s message?
    • What happened to the servant?
  • What kind of faith was Jesus talking about?
  • Do we have that kind of faith? Explain.
  • What tries to keep us from having faith?

Ten Lepers Read Luke 17:12-19; 10 Poor Lepers; The Unfriendly Samaritans; and The Ten Lepers

  • Who needed healing?
  • What did they ask of Jesus?
  • What did Jesus say to them?
    • Was the healing in the directive?
  • What did you think they were thinking as they were headed toward the temple?
  • Who turned back?
    • Why?
  • What was Jesus’ response to the one who turned back?
  • Why didn’t the others stop to give thanks?
  • Do we sometimes forget to say thank you? Why is that?
