Old Testament Review

Teachers: This is a great time to review Old Testament stories, characters, lessons, verses, history, and laws. Kids Korner is filled with review activities.

You might want to start with reciting the books of the Bible in order. The Rap song will help in rhythmically associating the titles of the books with the sound.

Review of Genesis

Ask the students to discuss what God created on each of the six days. You might ask each child in class to take a different day and draw a picture that represents the six days of creation. One Sunday, I had each child pick a number between 1 and 7. They were asked to find out what God did on that day and prepare to draw it on the white board. The first child drew rays of light. The second child drew the sky. The third child drew plants and trees. Etc. We were missing a sixth and seventh child, so I drew stick figures of a man and woman for the sixth day. One child took my marker and started to drastically improve on my drawing. She said, “Aren’t we grateful that you’re not God.”

You might want to do a matching exercise of each day’s activities:

____Day One       A. Water creatures and winged fowl

____Day Two       B. Living creatures and man and woman in God’s image

____Day Three    C. Light

____Day Four      D. Heaven

____Day Five       E. God rested

____Day Six         F. Two Great lights, stars

____Day Seven   G. Dry land, plants and trees

Story Telling Time - Ask the students to tell the story of Noah. [Genesis 6:6 – 8:22] If you have a puzzle of Noah and the ark – take it apart and hand each pupil a piece of the puzzle. The students must tell the story about the puzzle piece they are about to put together. When the last piece goes in, discuss the promise of the rainbow.

Or you can have each student act out the story. One Sunday, I brought little plastic animals to Sunday school. Each child selected an animal they were to have as a partner. We lined the chairs into an ark shape with the seats facing the outside of the ark. We put butcher paper across the top and crawled in. Two members of the church came and played Noah and Mrs. Noah. Children from an older class played Noah’s grown sons and daughter-in-laws. Noah reached up and started making rain drop sounds on the paper and the children said, “It’s raining.” We all pretended that the ark was rocking. Noah asked one of the animals what we should do? One little boy ,who was playing the pig, exclaimed – “I think we’d better pray.” Each child in turn started to pray. This is a fun activity to help the little ones experience the story.

Who was Abraham? Help the students read or tell about Abraham and Sarah. [Genesis 12 – 24]

You might start off with questions about what they remember that was special about Abraham, Sarah, Hagar, Ishmael, and Isaac.

Create a banner or mural for your Sunday school wall. Start out with your pictures of creation and Noah, then draw pictures of Abraham and Sarah. Have the older classes help write some of the vital stories. Each week as you review the Old Testament, add to the mural. At the end of the summer, invite parents to hear their children tell the important stories of the Bible and show them their special mural.

  • Discuss freedom.
  • Who sought freedom in the Bible?
  • Were there any slaves?
  • What kinds of bondage did Bible characters encounter?
  • Is there anything preventing our freedom today?
